Green algae - Conjugate algae - Micrasterias

Miljų - Ferskvann

Closterium

The group conjugate algae, called desmids, are much loved by people with a microscope because of their big size, variety and beauty. The cells of Micrasterias are composed of two symmetric halves, which are separated by a narrow waist. The cell is flat. Size about 100-200 my.

The reproducing process is in the start, where the two halves are separated and the chloroplast of the mother half-cell is extending out into the new, young half-cell.

In this page you find four images from species of the genus Micrasterias. Micrasterias. M.radiosa, M.furcata,M. pinnatifida, M.americana.
