Diatoms - Nitzschia - Thalassiosira - Thalassionema

The image shows three different genus of diatoms, all common in sea water. Nitzschia - Thalassiosira - Thalassionema nitzschoides
In the top of the image you find the oblong genus Nitzschia. In the middle you can look at a centric genus called Thalassiosira where the cells are connected with mucilage treads. Down in the image the oblong genus called Thalassionema nitzschoides is forming zig-zag chain where the cells are combined by a mucilage pillow in the end. All three genera are common in plankton net-samples from the coastal water.
The genus Thalassiosira includes several species very common in the phytoplankton from coastal water. Thalassiosira is centric and the cell chains are seen from the girdle view. Between the cells are many connecting thread. To identify the species of Thalassiosira it is necessary to clean off the organic matter in the cell and have an examination of the shells for location of processes and structures
