Dinoflagellates - Ceratium in sea water

Miljų - sjų

The genus Ceratium has great abundance in sea-water, and is one of the dominating and conspicuous genus of dinoflagellates, no less because of their size.

The image on the top shows  Ceratium trichoceros (in the middle) with three horns of almost the same length. C. furca has three straight horns. C. tripos (on the left side).

Video 1 C.tripos. shows the moving of the flagellum.

Video 2 shows the moving of C. lineatum

On this page you can find images of the five most common species of the genus Ceratium in seawater. Ceratium furca, C. fusus, C. lineatum, C.tripos, C.trichoceros, C.pulchellum.

C. cf. symmetricum

C. tripos (top) C.fusus (middle) and C.trichoceros

C.furca alongside another dinoflagellate, Dinophysis.

C. cf. pulchellum

Blooming

When a net sample contains homogenous species in great abundance, we talk about blooming. The blooming of dinoflagellates can happen in summer and early autumn.
