Green algae - Scenedesmus

Miljø - ferskvann

The genus Scenedesmus is one of the most common genera of the green algae. The cells are usually arranged in a row to form 4- 8 cells colony. The cells in the end often have spines or the spines are present on several or all the cells. There are hundreds of named species of Scenedesmus, but there is a question if there are variations of some species, which are named separately. The pyrenoids tied to starch production are obvious to observe. Scenedesmus demands water rich in nutrients. It is easy to keep in culture and is used as a nutrient for other culture organisms.
