SMALL FLAGELLATES

The small flagellates are an important group, which includes small photosynthetic cells with flagella. These smallest autotrophic organisms are rarely seen in plankton samples collected by nets. They can be collected and examined by special methods. A great part of the total biomass- production both in sea- water and in lakes are due to small flagellates. These organisms are also thought to be of great importance as a source of food for many zooplankton organisms.
