Background

The term Evidence-Based Practice has received much attention in professional fields and in debates about research politics, especially in the health and social work sector. Through strategic commitment to Evidence-Based Practice, Bergen University College has enhanced its national profile.

The essence of evidence based practice is combining clinical experience and expertise with the best available knowledge from research together with patient values.

The Centre for Evidence-Based Practice intends to focus on the challenges of information overload and the practice-research gap that the health and social sciences are facing. The Centre also focuses on how Evidence-Based Practice can be promoted while concurrently considering culture and professional performance of the disciplines based in the College.

About the Centre

The Centre for Evidence-Based Practice is to be a spearhead in Bergen University College’s strategic efforts within the health and social sciences. We are focusing on the challenges we are facing with regards to knowledge and we want to be a bridge-builder between the practical field and the university college.

The purpose of EBP is to strengthen the foundation for decision making for those who work in these areas, through helping them basing their practice on the best knowledge available. This way, the quality of the services offered within these areas is also improved.

Using Evidence-Based Practice is using different sources of knowledge in order to create the best foundation for decision making. These sources of knowledge are: Relevant and up-to-date research knowledge, clinical knowledge based on experience, and the patient’s/user’s preferences and resources in a given context.

Activities:

  • Integrating Evidence-Based Practice into the different educations, so that our students master and understand the importance of being able to facilitate new knowledge
  • Further education titled “Working and Teaching Evidence-Based”
  • Research and development of the field of Evidence-Based Practice, particularly through co-operative projects with health and social sectors in other fields.
  • Contribute to making Evidence-Based Practice more known and in doing so making research more available.

More and more, and from more and more instances, it is expected that all professional practice should be evidence-based. The Centre for Evidence-Based Practice wishes to increase competence and knowledge about Evidence-Based Practice in the academic field, the different parts of the health and social services and in other professional practices.

Everyday life has changed for health and social workers as a result of the new information society we now live in. It is therefore important to educate students that are competent seekers of relevant information, and who are skilled enough to critically examine this information.
