Assessment of Young Learner Literacy

Project leader: Professor Angela Hasselgreen
Project period: 2008-2010

This project has been accepted by ECML (European Centre for Modern Languages in Graz) as part of its programme of activities 2008-2011. The project is coordinated by Angela Hasselgreen, HiB, with partners in Spain, Slovenia and Lithuania. The project is linked to the CEFR.

The project aims to produce material which teachers can use to establish the level of the reading and writing of young learners (YLs) between 9 and 13 years, linked to The Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Features will be identified that characterise FL (foreign language) reading and writing in YLs, as they pass through the A1 to B1 stages of the CEFR.

The research carried out involves longitudinal (classroom-based) studies of YL reading and writing in the FL. The project builds on a local project involving schools in Bergen, Norway, where longitudinal research on YL's reading and writing has been carried out since autumn 2007.

The project will have as a common core the study of English learning, for practical purposes. Additionally, second language learners of some of the national languages will also be included in the study.

The first phase of the project has involved two classes in Bergen schools, carried out by Angela Hasselgreen. The findings from this phase will be presented at the EALTA conference (European Association for Language Testing and Assessment) in May 2008, Athens. The ECML partnership will use these findings as a starting point for their work, beginning with a 2-day meeting in Graz, June 2008.

A central workshop to be held in Graz, 2010, will provide access to a diversity of second or foreign languages (L2s), and a function of the workshop will to consider the applicability of the material for other L2s, and initiate work to adapt the material to these.

Additionally, a regional Nordic-Baltic workshop is planned for 2010 to train teachers to use the material.
