Nordic Network for Music Education - NNME

About the network

NNME is a network within Nordplus. The partners in the network are all among the leading institutions in the Nordic and the Baltic countries, within the academic field of ”music education" (in the Nordic countries called "music pedagogy").

Intensive courses for master students 1997–2009:

• 1997: The Danish University of Education, Copenhagen: Music Education as a scientific area

• 1999: Norwegian Academy of Music, Oslo: Research on instrumental and vocal teaching

• 2000: Bergen University College, The Grieg Academy: The dissertation and the theory of knowledge - Music education and the post modern

• 2001: The Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, Department of Music Education: Quantitative research within music education and brain research in music

• 2002: The University of Luleaa, Piteaa Academy of Music: Philosophy and development of knowledge within art, media and technique .

• 2003: Royal Academy of Music, Stockholm: Studies of teaching processes and musical learning - research perspectives and research methods

• 2004: Malmø Academy of Music and Copenhagen Rhythmic Music Conservatory: Open and informal learning of music - research findings and experiences from practitioners.

• 2005: Norwegian Academy of Music: Music Education from the learner's perspective

• 2006: Bergen University College , The Grieg Academy: Music and body in connection with Music Education

• 2008: Sibelius Academy, Helsinki: Globalisation and identity in music education.

• 2009: Hedmark University College, Hamar: Social justice and inclusion in music edication

The network comprises 17 institutions, carefully selected, and represent all the five Nordic and the three Baltic countries. For a number of years Bergen University College has been the network coordinator.

Aim

The broad aim of the network is to strengthen the reflection and the discussion of music education, and through this also contribute to its development. The particular strengths and specialties of each country and institution are made use of in network cooperation and thus it is possible to carry out in-depth studies with perspectives and broadness exceeding the capacity of individual institutions.

The network contact persons have good connections with the international network ISME (International Society for Music Education) and NNMPF (Nordisk nettverk for musikkpedagogisk forskning).

Network activities

Network activities include teacher and student exchange, network planning and intensive seminars for masters students. Joint intensive courses for master students has been one of the key areas of the network. Eleven  courses have been organized.

The topics and focuses have varied according to the hosts and their specialities and preferences. Students also get the opportunity to present their ongoing projects. Particular teachers at the course comment upon these projects.

By choosing commentators from other institutions and countries with different research traditions the students might get a broader perspective on their project.

Democracy in Music Education

A three year plan for 2008-2010 with the heading "Democracy in Music Education from a Nordic Perspective" was elaborated in 2007. Two intensive courses with different aspects of the large topic have already successfully been organized.

The third course with the subtitle "Power relations in music education", hosted by the Danish School of Education, is under planning in week 45, 2010 in Copenhagen.

The network has been granted with Nordplus-support for a network meeting in Tallin, Estonia  in June 2010 and there are plans for another meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania  in June 2011.
