Master in Education

The Master in Education focuses on the activity of teaching and the facilitation of bildung as the fundamental professional responsibility of educators. It is a profession-based education and its foundation is a bachelor degree in teacher education, including at least 60 ECTS in the specialization discipline.

The master's programme is a 2-year full-time study. Students in the programme choose a discipline for specialization and in-depth study. The disciplines offered are English Didactics, Mathematics' Didactics, and Pedagogies. This choice will determine which discipline will be the focus of the master's dissertation.


The Master in Education programme qualifies students for work in the field of research and development, for carrying out research and developing activities linked to teaching, and for applying for further education.


Year 1

  • Module 1: The Teaching Profession10 ECTS
  • Module 2: Philosophy, Methods and Academic Texts 20 ECTS
  • Module 3: Interdisciplinary Educational Perspectives 15 ECTS
  • Module 4: Discipline specialization (part 1) 15 ECTS

Year 2

  • Module 4: Discipline specialization (part 2) 15 ECTS
  • Module 5: Master's dissertation 45 ECTS

The teaching is organized in lectures, projects, group work, classroom observations, presentation seminars, written assignments, supervision sessions and peer responses. Activity in forums involving students from the various discipline groups are stressed as a meeting place for discussion and collaboration.

Admission requirements:

  • An undergraduate/Bachelor's degree in education or equivalent of at least three-years' duration (180 ECTS)
  • 60 ECTS in the specialization discipline you are applying for
  • Minimum average grade C (in Norwegian scale), in the specialization discipline (60 ECTS)
  • Documented proficiency in English language
